Keep Your Pet’s Teeth Healthy

Taking care of your pet’s teeth is just as important as the rest of their health! Dental issues like bad breath, swollen gums, and plaque buildup can lead to serious problems if left untreated. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings at our hospital can prevent most dental diseases—but in between visits, keep an eye out for signs like:

  • Bad breath
  • Yellowish-brown plaque buildup
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Pain while eating or when touching the mouth
  • Difficulty eating or loss of appetite
  • Loose or missing teeth

If your pet has bad breath or irritated gums, gingivitis might be the culprit. Left untreated, it can lead to more serious infections like periodontal disease.

Professional Pet Dental Cleanings

Unlike people, pets need general anesthesia for a full dental cleaning, which means a day at the hospital and a team of skilled veterinarians and technicians caring for them. Before the procedure, we recommend (and require for older pets) bloodwork to ensure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia.

The cleaning process includes:

  • Pre-cleaning checkup – A full physical exam before anesthesia.
  • Tartar removal – Hand scaling and ultrasonic cleaning above and below the gum line.
  • Dental exam – Checking for deep pockets that could signal infection or periodontal disease. X-rays may be needed for further evaluation.
  • Polishing & antibacterial rinse – Smoothing the tooth surface to help prevent future plaque buildup.
  • At-Home Dental Care

Your pet’s dental care doesn’t stop at the vet! Brushing your pet’s teeth regularly is key to keeping their mouth healthy. Our team can show you the best techniques to make it easier.

With annual dental exams and good home care, you’ll keep your pet’s breath fresh and their smile healthy—because a happy pet means a happy you!
